From my journal: March 6, 2010
Here are a couple of small observations that made me smile this week. One day, during 6/7th grade, the students all pointed to my head and said “Airport!” So I looked up and saw a spider descending on a thread of its web about to land on my head, the spider airport.
In Ine, we have tons of millipedes (as opposed to the poisonous centipedes) that are dark brown and about an inch and a half long. The Marshallese word for this little bug is “turen” because they crawl along like little trains. Maybe due to the simplicity of my current lifestyle, I find this really amusing. It must be train season because they’re everywhere. I don’t see many scary centipedes because I think they mostly stick to the forest. But occasionally they get brought in with loads of coconuts collected from the forest floor. A while back I had one about 4 inches long slither through my front door while I was at my desk grading papers. I quickly proceeded to smash it with a water jug.
Well, that’s about all I have to report for now. Yokwe Kom!
